Obama Voices Support for Labor

In a letter to the American Federation of Government Employees stating his concerns for DHS, president-elect Obama stated that he "supports collective bargaining rights for all workers."

He pledged to "review decisions by the Bush administration that have denied these rights to federal employees and seek to restore them."

The letter also spoke against the concept of pay for performance, saying the current administration, by under-funding related initiatives, created systems that reward some employees at the expense of other employees.

Wearing Politics on Your Sleeve Now OK

The Office of Special Counsel has said that now that the elections have passed, it is okay for federal employees to literally wear their politics on their sleeves by wearing candidate-oriented t-shirts and similar clothing in the workplace.

A Hatch Act interpretation issued by the office notes that the law bars engaging in political activity while on duty, in uniform or in the federal workplace, and that political activity is defined as activity directed toward the success or failure of a political party, candidate for a partisan office or partisan political group.
