The Navy commissioned the amphibious transport dock John P. Murtha Oct. 8, during a ceremony held at Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia. The 10th ship in the San Antonio Class, Murtha has a flight deck capable of accommodating CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters or MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft. The class offers greater cargo capacity than its predecessors, which enables greater flexibility in carrying personnel, vehicles and supplies. Murtha will be able to deploy with a landing force of 669, which can expand to 800 in surge situations. The ship is named after the former Democratic congressman from Pennsylvania, who earned a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts while serving in both the Korean and Vietnam wars.
