A new mobile app would help soldiers pre-plan deployments to high altitudes, and help prevent the onset of mountain sickness. The Altitude Readiness Management System (ARMS) would enable users to predict how and when their performance could be hindered by the nausea, fatigue, and headaches typical of mountain sickness. Unit commanders could plan the rate of their troops’ ascents accordingly, to minimize the malady’s effects. The app was developed by the U.S. Army Research Institute, which then turned it over to the Medical Research and Materiel Command for use in the field.
