The Army Women’s Foundation inducted members of the 14th WAC Band – the armed forces’ last all-female military band – into its hall of fame during a March 11 ceremony on Capitol Hill. During its history, the unit provided musical support and boosted morale for numerous presidential inaugurations. Retired Maj. Gen. Patricia Hickerson, the band’s former commander, presented the award to CW5 Jeanne Pace, the last member still serving on active duty. In accepting the honor, Pace made it clear that the band’s military mission always remained paramount. “We’re soldiers first,” Pace said. The 14th WAC Band, which was formed in 1948 at Fort Meade, Md., stood down in 1976.
