The U.S. and Afghanistan signed a bilateral agreement Sept. 30, which included a status-of-forces agreement and terms under which the U.S. and NATO would assist security efforts. The agreement’s cornerstone calls for Afghanistan to assume the largest role for protecting its people from Taliban and al Qaeda insurgents. It comes days after newly elected Ashraf Ghani was sworn in as the nation’s president.
