The Pentagon’s top scientific research agency is exploring the possibility that brain stimulation could help service members and veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and other brain maladies. In October, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) issued a formal request for potential contractors to come forward with their ideas to implement the plan to improve the overall understanding of brain disorders. "Methods developed through this program will use neural recording and stimulation to close the loop on therapeutic treatment in individuals who receive minimal benefits from currently available treatments," the DARPA request stated.
