Defense Secretary Ashton Carter has voiced his support for allowing qualified transgender troops to serve. “I’m very open-minded about … what [service members’] personal lives and proclivities are, provided they can do what we need them to do for us,” Carter said, speaking at a Feb. 22 town hall meeting at Kandahar Air Base, Afghanistan. “I don’t think anything but their suitability for service should preclude them.”
