The Army and Boeing Company are moving forward with plans to upgrade the H-47 Chinook helicopter fleet. Under the terms of a new contract, Boeing will refit three test aircraft with better drivetrains – able to be more compatible with the advanced rotor blades now on the aircraft. Once in place, the upgrades will enhance the twin-rotor workhorse’s lift capacity by 1,500 pounds. In time, Boeing will upgrade 542 of the aircraft at its Philadelphia facility – ensuring their utility through 2060.
