The Pentagon has authorized imminent danger and hostile fire pay for service members deployed to parts of Africa. Army Times reported March 9 that those who serve in Niger, Mali, and northern Cameroon would qualify for the compensation, which would increase their paychecks by $225 per month. The decision stems from the incident last October, in which four soldiers were killed in an ambush while stationed in the region. The slain soldiers were authorized the pay posthumously.
