Expansion of Europe Presence Planned

The Army is developing a strategy to rotate forces through Europe, with an eye on deterring Russian aggression. The plan calls for storage of equipment at strategic sites, to supply the heavy armored and aviation units in theater. In its 2017 budget, the Obama administration asked for $3.4 billion – most of which would be used to fund the operation. Currently, there are about 30,000 U.S. troops in Europe – compared to 300,000 at the height of the Cold War.
