Retired Gen. Carl E. Mundy Jr., who served as the 30th Commandant of the Marine Corps from 1991 to 1995, died April 3. His 38-year military career included combat tours in Vietnam, during which he too part in milestone campaigns at Khe Sanh and Con Thien. He is survived by three children, and 11 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Linda Sloan Mundy, his wife of 56 years, died in June 2013. Two of his sons now serve in the Marine Corps — Brig. Gen. Carl Mundy III, and Col. Timothy Mundy. The family planned to bury Gen. Mundy in Waynesville, N.C., next to his late wife. “America has lost a valiant warrior, a dedicated public servant, and a good and decent man,” said Gen. James F. Amos, the current commandant. “He served with honor and distinction through more than four decades of dedication to country and Corps.”
