Members of the National Guard and reserves who serve 20 years or more now will be considered veterans, thanks to a new law. Previously, reserve-component service members were considered veterans only if they served 180 days or more in federal status outside of training. The new law has no effect on benefits. Those who serve 20 years in reserve-component status still are entitled to the same retirement package and VA benefits.
