Service members no longer can carry over more than 60 days’ annual leave to the following year. Persons with more than 60 days of annual leave must use or lose it by Oct. 1, unless they are approved for special leave accrual. The change was implemented under guidelines set forth by the 2013 defense-spending bill. Previously, leave carryover guidelines allowed service members to carry as many as 75 days over to the following year. That regulation was implemented in 2010, when the high operations tempo often limited service members’ ability to take as much leave as they earned.
