Sixteen service members – 15 Marines and one Navy Corpsman – died July 11 when a KC-130T aircraft crashed in rural Leflore County, Miss. The plane was en route to Naval Air Station Calif., from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., carrying personnel and equipment. It was attached to Marine Aerial Refueling and Transport Squadron (VMGR) 452, Marine Air Group-49, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Forces Reserve. The cause of the crash is under investigation, but early media reports suggest the plane may have blown up in midair. An ordnance disposal team moved into the area, to search for any small-arms ammunition and weapons that may have been strewn about the crash site. The Marine Corps withheld the names of the victims, pending notification of next of kin.
