Two Marines who died when a man attacked their workplace received the Navy-Marine Corps Medal, the military’s highest award for non-combat valor. Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Sullivan and Staff Sgt. David Wyatt died, along with Sgt. Carson Holmquist, Lance Cpl. Skip Wells and Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith, at the hands of a gunman who entered the Naval Reserve Center in Chattanooga, Tenn., on July 16, 2016. Eyewitnesses stated that Sullivan and Wyatt took control of evacuating people from the area and contacting authorities. The gunman, Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, also attacked a recruiting center. Chattanooga police later killed him.
