Gen. Mark A. Milley, the Army chief of staff, painted a stark picture of the future in which a war with any of the nation’s potential adversaries is “almost guaranteed.” Speaking Oct. 5 at the Association of the U.S. Army exposition in Washington, Milley stressed the need to adapt to challenges, accelerate the acquisition of new technologies, train future leaders, and make sound decisions – all in order to meet the looming threat. “We must prepare for the future,” he said. He also offered a stern warning to would-be adversaries: “Those who try to oppose the United States … we will stop you and beat you harder than you’ve ever been beaten before.”
