The Navy has awarded Lockheed Martin Corp. $43.2 million to design and develop a long-range autonomous submarine. The watercraft, known as the Extra Large Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (XLUUV), would be capable of performing a wide array of missions and carrying a variety of payloads. Once operational, XLUUV would enhance the Navy’s intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance, mine-countermeasure, indication and warning notification, and anti-submarine warfare training capabilities. Like other robotic systems, XLUUV would perform these missions with greater cost efficiency than currently available.
