The Navy is backtracking on its mandate to do away with addressing sailors by their ratings titles. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Steve Giordano made the announcement Dec. 21, that sailors can go ahead and resume referring each other by the skill-set patches they earned, rather than the generic “petty officer” moniker. Basing the decision on feedback from sailors, Richardson said, “The removal of ratings titles was [deemed] unnecessary and detracted from accomplishing our major goals.”
