Neither Ship Veered Toward Safety

Neither the destroyer Fitzgerald nor the Philippine freighter altered course to avert the June 17 collision that killed seven sailors, Reuters reported June 26. The captain of the Philippine ship, the ACX Crystal, told investigators that the Fitzgerald ignored warnings after steaming into the freighter’s path, according to the report. The incident, which took place in Tokyo Bay, is under investigation by several U.S., Japanese and Filipino agencies, including the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard.
