The littoral combat ship Milwaukee, the newest vessel in its class, lost power in its engines while underway and likely will face “weeks” of repair before it is seaworthy again, the U.S. Naval Institute Press reported Dec. 14. Milwaukee had to be towed to Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Va., the closest installation to where it was when the mishap occurred. The ship was sailing to Mayport Naval Station, Fla., from Halifax, Nova Scotia. The USNI report indicated that “fine metallic debris” clogged the engines’ gear filter system, causing the crew to shut the engines down before they were damaged more severely.
