The Navy’s newest Virginia-class attack submarine will be called New Jersey. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced the decision to name the vessel during a ceremony in Jersey City, N.J., May 24. Like other vessels in its class, New Jersey will displace 7,800 tons, be 377 feet long and 34 feet wide, and have the capability to move at speeds greater than 25 knots while submerged. General Dynamics/Electric Boat Corp. will build New Jersey at the company’s facility in Groton, Conn.
