Police in Washington, D.C., arrested Bryan Whitman, the senior-most civilian public affairs officer at the Pentagon, in May. Whitman was charged with stealing the license plates off the car of a nanny who worked at a home near where Whitman lived on Capitol Hill, according to several media reports. Upon learning of Whitman’s arrest, his Pentagon supervisors suspended him, revoked his top-secret security clearance, and placed him on administrative leave. The arrest stemmed from a dispute apparently had with the nanny, who used visitor passes to park on the street. According to reports, Whitman became perturbed about the woman parking there illegally, even though this was not the case. After a set of tags were stolen and then replaced, the family the nanny worked for put her car under surveillance. Whitman apparently was caught on camera when he returned to steal the tags again. The Washington Post reported that the case against Whitman was dismissed, after he agreed to pay $1,000 in restitution and perform 32 hours’ community service.
