The shortage of pilots is hindering readiness, senior military officials told a congressional panel. The problem is most severe in the Air Force, Lt. Gen. Gina M. Grosso, the service’s chief of manpower and personnel said, in testimony before the House Armed Services military personnel subcommittee.
“This confluence of circumstances has birthed a national aircrew crisis,” Grosso said. “A 1,200 fighter pilot shortage amounts to a $12 billion capital loss for the United States Air Force,” she said.

The Army reported a shortage of 731 pilots between 2010 and 2017, with comparable numbers among the Navy and Marine Corps.
