The four service branches have forwarded to Defense Department leadership their plans to integrate women into combat units. Personnel officials will review each proposal. The actions come in response to Defense Secretary Ash Carter’s decree last month that all billets – including those in combat operations – be open to women. Since then, Carter has granted an extension to U.S. Special Operations Command, which now has until April 1 to file its plan. Leadership, meanwhile, will work on a short-term timetable aimed at implementing the policy.
