The Marine Corps is investigating circumstances surrounding the March death of a Marine Corps recruit at Parris Island Marine Corps Recruit Depot, S.C. The Wall Street Journal reported June 29 that the probe involves “more than a dozen” drill instructors. In April, Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., wrote a letter to Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Robert B. Neller, requesting an inquiry into the death of Pvt. Raheel Siddiqui of Taylor, Mich., a Muslim. Dingell sought clarification regarding the removal of the commander of Siddiqui’s recruit battalion, Lt. Col. Joshua Kissoon, one day before the young Marine died. She also wanted to know if hazing factored into his death, and sought assurances that related medical and autopsy records be preserved.
