The Obama administration’s proposed $122.2 billion funding request for the Air Force focuses on the service’s commitment to divest itself of aging inventories. The service intends to retire U-2S and E-3 Sentry (AWACS) aircraft altogether, and restore the E-8 Joint STARS and F-15C Eagle planned divestitures. Also, the Air Force again wants to retire the A-10 Thunderbolt II close-air support aircraft. Configurations of the new F-35 Lightning II would fulfill that role in the future, service leaders said. Service leaders warned that should the tight budgetary climate continue, the Air Force would have difficulty modernizing and funding high-priority programs.
