Contradicting early official reports, the U.S. Secret Service confirmed Sept. 29 that the former soldier who penetrated the grounds of the White House Sept. 19 was not apprehended until he reached the East Room. At the time of the incident, the Secret Service stated that agents apprehended Omar J. Gonzalez of Copperas Cove, Texas, “after entering the White House North Portico doors.” Family members identified Gonzalez in media reports as suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Copperas Cove is located adjacent to Fort Hood, Texas, where Gonzalez was stationed he served. The incident is under investigation.
