Thirty-six flag officers who retired from the five armed services have written an open letter expressing support for the Iran nuclear deal. In the letter, released Aug. 11, the retired generals and admirals termed the agreement as “the most effective means currently available to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.” The agreement offers the best avenue of stopping Iran from producing such weapons, and enhances U.S. national security, they wrote. “If the deal is rejected by America, the Iranians could have a nuclear weapon within a year. The choice is that stark,” they wrote.
