Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Louis F. Cardin, of Temecula, Calif., was killed in action March 19 in northern Iraq, the Pentagon has announced. The official notification stated that Cardin died “when the enemy attacked his unit with rocket fire.” Cardin was attached to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, based at Camp Lejeune, N.C. The unit was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, the coalition effort to rid Iraq and Syria of Islamic State terrorist fighters.
