Most sailors have until April 30 to update their government life insurance information, via SOES (the Servicemembers Group Life Insurance Online Enrollment System). Failure to do so would not preclude current beneficiaries from receiving Servicemembers Group Life Insurance (SGLI) benefits, however. Rather, the deadline applies to those who should make changes to their existing coverage.
Sailors can access SOES through the Defense Manpower Data Center’s milConnect portal, at https://milconnect.dmdc.osd.mil/milconnect/. Once logged in, they can find “Benefits” under the “Life Insurance” menu. At this point, they should be able to name beneficiaries, coverage amounts, and distributions of proceeds.
You do not have to update your insurance information if you:
* Have previously declined SGLI and wish to continue without coverage.
* Have to use older paper forms because they have no way of making changes online.
* Already have testamentary trusts or testamentary custodial accounts.
