Soldier Killed in Combat

The Pentagon identified Army Staff Sgt. Mark R. De Alencar, 37, of Edgewood, Md., as the soldier who died April 8 during combat operations in Afghanistan. De Alencar was attached to 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. According to Stars and Stripes, De Alencar joined the Army in 2009 and served as an infantryman before earning his green beret in 2016. He held Ranger and Special Forces tabs, a Purple Heart medal, six Army Commendation Medals, and both the Combat Infantryman and Expert Infantryman badges.
