U.S. special-operations troops killed Abu Sayyaf, a senior leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), during a May 16 raid into Syria. Abu Sayyaf was the chief financial officer for ISIL, responsible for coordinating the organization’s fund-raising activities through petroleum sales. The SpecOps troops captured Umm Sayyaf, the slain terrorist’s wife, and rescued a woman believed to be held as their slave. Coalition leaders believe the captured woman will be able to provide invaluable intelligence data. No coalition forces were killed or hurt during the raid.
