General Dynamics Land Systems unveiled plans to upgrade two of the Army’s primary vehicle platforms. The M1A2 Abrams tank would receive enhanced armor, more electrical power, and expanded network capabilities. Some flat-hulled versions of the Stryker combat vehicle would receive a double hull, more powerful engine and alternator, an upgraded suspension, and the ability to communicate with other vehicles digitally. The changes would make both the Abrams and Stryker more capable of handing the systems added on by the Army during the years they have been in service, with headroom for more upgrades when they come along. General Dynamics displayed the upgraded prototype vehicles at the Association of the U.S. Army’s annual exposition in Washington, D.C., Oct. 12-13.
