The Navy recently held a successful demonstration of “swarm” technology, in which numerous unmanned undersea vehicles were able to gather and share information while underway. The test took place at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, R.I., on Aug. 16. A Blackwing unmanned aerial vehicle that was launched from a submarine managed the command-and-control process. In time, the Navy expects such systems to enhance the ability to enhance real-time ability to disseminate relevant information among numerous manned and unmanned components on the battlefield.
