The Navy, Air Force and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) have successfully completed a test Feb. 4 of the Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM). The mission involved deployment of a prototype missile from an Air Force B-1B bomber, over the sea-test range near Point Mugu, Calif. While following its projected course, the missile wended its way through checkpoints. At one point, the vehicle independently detected and avoided an obstacle placed in its way. In time, such systems would reduce intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance requirements while guaranteeing that intended targets would be hit, DARPA stated on its Web site.
