Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) is ordering the mobilization of 1,000 state National Guard troops, to deploy to the border with Mexico. The troops will assist federal customs and border-protection agents with efforts to mitigate the influx of refugees from Mexico and Central America that are flowing into the U.S., according to media reports. Many of the refugees are children. “I will not stand idly by while our citizens are under assault and little children from Central America are detained in squalor,” Perry said. Concerns have been heightened in recent days regarding conditions at refugee camps on the U.S. side of the border. Political opponents claim that Perry is exaggerating the issue in an effort to posture himself for a run at the GOP nomination for president in 2016.
