Service members cannot travel to Paris on unofficial travel for the time being. U.S. European Command implemented the prohibition Nov. 15, in the aftermath of the Nov. 13 terrorist attacks that killed roughly 130 people there. The travel ban also applies to Defense Department civilian employees, contractors, and command-sponsored dependents and family members. It encompasses a 50-kilometer radius of the French capital. Waivers require approval of the first general, flag officer, or Senior Executive Service officer in the chain of command. It also includes travel throughout France, including cruise ship excursions. The move is precautionary. U.S. officials also want to minimize traffic at the French borders, while authorities there conduct investigations into the attacks.
