The Senate confirmed two retired Marine Corps generals –James Mattis and John Kelly – to serve in cabinet posts in President Trump’s administration. Mattis was confirmed 98-1 as Secretary of Defense, while Kelly was confirmed 88-11 as Secretary of Homeland Security. Mattis told lawmakers, “I will endeavor to keep our unique all volunteer force second to none,” during his confirmation hearing. In a statement on the DHS web site, Kelly said, “I look forward to protecting our nation, its citizens and preserving our liberty and upholding the rule of law as I continue my service to this great country.”
