Bell Helicopter’s V-280 Valor has made its first flight. The tilt-rotor aircraft, which the company envisions as the eventual replacement for the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, achieved the milestone Dec. 18, at Bell’s Amarillo, Texas, facility. In time, contractors expect the Army to decide between Valor and Sikorsky Aircraft’s S-97 Raider, as the Black Hawk’s successor. Raider, which relies upon twin overhead rotors that move in opposite directions, made its first demonstrator flight in August 2008. Most recently, Raider reached an airspeed of 150 knots during a flight test earlier this year. Sikorsky is building Raider in conjunction with Lockheed Martin Corp.
