The White House denied an Associated Press report that the Department of Homeland Security had considered mobilizing the National Guard to assist in finding and deporting undocumented immigrants. The AP report cited an internal DHS memo, signed by Secretary John Kelly that called for the possible activation of roughly 100,000 Guard troops to assist the agency in fulfilling President Trump’s Jan. 25 directive to increase efforts to rid the country of undocumented persons. The Daily Beast news web site quoted DHS spokesperson Gillian Christiansen as saying, “The department is not considering mobilizing the National Guard.” White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer called the report untrue as well.
