GSA has issued guidance (FMR Bulletin B-44) on considerations for agencies as they plan for acquiring warehousing space and throughout the life-cycle of the warehouse.
GAO in 2014 recommended that GSA provide guidance and best practices to make the government’s warehousing activities more efficient. Afterward, GSA and several agencies participated in the development of industry standards called ASTM standards for warehousing assets.
Agencies are to follow those standards, a Federal Register notice says, adding that because the standards are protected by copyright, it could not include them in the guidance. Instead, it said that agency standards executives should coordinate the provision of needed standards within each agency.
GSA meanwhile stressed that “if the contents can be reduced, the need for warehousing facilities can also be reduced concomitantly.”
