OPM has posted new demographic information on the SES, showing for example that the average career SES member served 18.3 years as a federal employee before rising to the executive cadre.

Further, the average SES member has been in the SES for 4.4 years, 4.0 of them in the current position.

Of the 7,910 SES members as of September 2013, 91 percent were career, 8 percent political and the rest limited term or limited emergency appointments. Of SES members at the time, 66.31 percent were male; 80.12 percent white; 92.27 percent had no disability.

DoD had the largest number, 1,250, followed by Justice, 768, and DHS, 604. By geographic area, 50.2 percent were in the District of Columbia, 14.47 percent in Virginia and 11.02 percent in Maryland—in the latter two cases, largely in the city’s suburbs.

Apart from the capital area, the largest numbers were in California, 203, Texas, 185, Georgia, 136, and Illinois, 106.
