A bill (S-1888) increasing the standard buyout amount to $40,000 government-wide is ready for floor voting in the Senate following approval by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, the first solid step in Congress toward enacting the closely-watched proposal.

The bipartisan measure approved without objection thus becomes a candidate for approval by the full chamber under a procedure in which a bill can be quickly passed. No counterpart bill has been offered yet in the House.

The increase would be the first applying government-wide since in the amount was first set at $25,000 in the early 1990s. DoD last year received authority to pay up to $40,000.
