OPM Updates Status of Cyber Breach Services

About 2.4 million people have enrolled in the identity theft protection and credit monitoring services related to the cybertheft of records on current and former federal employees and others who had background investigations done on them, and about 1 million have enrolled for similar services related to the similar breach of personnel records, OPM has said. It said that rate is about triple the industry average. In addition to those services for which enrollment is needed, certain other services such as insurance to cover costs related to restoring identity after an identity theft are automatic. OPM meanwhile has restated that those who received a notice with the PIN number needed to sign up but who misplaced it, as well as those who believe their records may have been compromised but haven’t received a notice–all the notices in both incidents have now been sent–should access the verification center on its site.
