Ride-Sharing Services Approved for Travelers

Agencies may allow their employees on temporary duty to use ride-sharing services, under a GSA travel bulletin which however does not apply to travel in or around an employee’s official duty station. The policy includes such services—typically using mobile applications or websites to connect riders with drivers for hire—as a form of “special conveyance” that can be used as an alternative to taxis or rental cars when in the interests of the government. Under travel bulletin 16-05, agencies must review their policies to authorize use of such services when it is deemed efficient and effective for the government and if allowed by local laws.
