President Obama has issued an executive order to reform several personnel practices of the SES, including speeding up and simplifying the evaluation process; setting goals for execs to take rotational assignments to different agencies or to different functions within their own agency; boosting the amount of money available for performance awards; and generally requiring that execs be paid more than those they supervise. Certain additional changes are to be phased in, including creating talent and succession management programs and boosting “onboarding” programs for those newly hired and continuing career development programs afterward. The administration also announced winners of the inaugural President’s Customer Service Awards, including an SSA employee who streamlined operations in a field office and a VA doctor for his work to improve patient satisfaction at a mental health inpatient unit.
