PTSD App AvailablePublished: Friday, August 03, 2012
Veterans who are undergoing treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) now can use a new application for their smart phones, which could help them cope with their conditions when between visits for treatment. The app is called PE Coach, for "prolonged exposure." It works by helping patients process trauma memory, thus reducing the adverse reactions such memory may trigger. Patients also can use the app to record therapy sessions to review later, make notes about their feelings, and prepare for future counseling sessions. The Defense and Veterans Affairs departments, which developed the app jointly, say it should be used as an embellishment to professional counseling rather than a replacement.
