Budget Would be Generally Tight
The raise recommendation came in the context of a budget that seeks to trim the government's large annual deficits through several steps, including an overall three-year freeze on spending on discretionary programs outside the defense and security areas. It projects overall executive branch employment to fall from 2,148,000 full-time equivalent positions this year to 2,106,000, although the drop is mainly due to the Commerce Department shedding some 100,000 temporary full-time slots created for this year's census. DoD is projected to grow by some 38,000 to 758,000, while HHS, DHS, VA and Justice would see gains of about 3,000-6,000 jobs each. Other departments and agencies are projected to hold about steady in their job counts.
