Service members will see their Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) rise by an average of 0.7 percent on Jan. 1. Generally, mid-level enlisted service members with dependents should see their BAH rise by about $19 per month in comparison with the 2017 allowance. Junior officers with dependents should expect an increase of $16 per month. Nevertheless, as is the norm with BAH, the allowance is not intended to cover the entire cost of housing. Typically, each service member will pay for four percent of the national average housing cost out of pocket. More information is available on line at www.defensetravel.dod.mil/site/bah.cfm.
