Army Maj. Gen. Gary Volesky, the commander of the 101st Airborne Division, has assumed command of the mission to help quell the spread of the deadly Ebola virus in West Africa. Volesky heads an ongoing operation that to date included establishment in Liberia of a 25-bed hospital at Monrovia and a treatment unit in Tubmanburg, as well as laboratory tests of samples from more than 1,500 patients. Medical teams are establishing a staging base and transport hub in Dakar, Senegal, as well. Military strength for the mission, dubbed Operation United Assistance, soon could reach 3,900.
